Happy Mother's Day!
For all those things you do as a mom, both seen and unseen, here's to you!Let's hope that on this special day, every expression of gratitude and acknowledgment is thoughtful, tasteful and ideally, either a treasure or completely edible and/or perishable. And here's hoping that no one receives any clutter disguised as affection today.
Being me, and knowing that, fortunately, my mom wants for nothing material, I typically send flowers as a way of recognizing the day. They brighten her home, smell wonderful, and don't take up any space in a drawer or cupboard after the message has been received. This year, we decided to do something different. We selected a local charity in Detroit, The Joy Project, as a way of honoring my mom. I would have still sent flowers in addition to making a contribution in her honor, but I knew that would have seemed extravagant to her and who wants to annoy their mother on Mother's Day?So, while it may be too late this year, please consider other ways of expressing your love and affection for others beyond buying them some thing.Particularly some thing that does little to enhance the quality of their lives, bringing neither comfort nor convenience, just something else to dust. For most non-profits, any donation is welcome and a worthy tribute. And if money is too tight, a gift of your time should prove just as valuable or moreso.Just as we were taught, it is the thought that counts.
